Early Developmental Therapy

Early developmental therapy is a specialized, play-based approach that supports an infant or young child’s foundational skills during the first years of life - when the brain is most rapidly growing and wiring itself.

What it is

Early developmental therapy focuses on helping babies and young children build the essential motor, sensory, social-emotional, and feeding skills they need to thrive. It’s typically provided by trained therapists (often occupational, physical, or speech therapists) who specialize in early childhood development.

While occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) all play roles in early developmental therapy, at Peakside Pioneers, we specialize exclusively in OT to support foundational skills like motor development, sensory processing, and co-regulation. For PT or SLP needs, we offer referrals to trusted local providers.

What it supports

Early developmental therapy can help with:

  • Motor skills: head control, play in TummyTime, hand-eye coordination, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, walking
  • Feeding skills: sucking, swallowing, transitioning to solids
  • Sensory processing: tolerating touch, sound, movement
  • Regulation: calming, co-regulation with caregivers
  • Social–emotional foundations: bonding, engagement, early communication

( ...and many other skills!)

How it Works

Sessions are:

  • Play-based: using play as therapy to regulate, connect and learn
  • Relationship-centered: building on authentic interactions to encourage learning through s
  • Individualized: tailoring to a child’s specific strengths, developmental needs, interests, and forms of self-expression
  • Family-oriented: incorporating family dynamics, environments, daily routines, and cultural preferences so progress continues at home
  • Rooted in early neuroscience: supporting the brain-body systems that help littles move, breathe, feed, and connect well

Who it's for

Any baby or toddler who:

  • Is late meeting milestones
  • Was born prematurely
  • Has feeding challenges
  • Shows muscle tightness / low tone
  • Has difficulty calming, sleeping, or tolerating touch or movement
  • Has difficulty playing, interacting, or connecting with others socially
  • Or simply needs extra support to build strong foundations

Peakside Pioneers is an OT-led practice. We do not currently offer PT or ST services in-house but collaborate with other professionals for comprehensive care.

Occupational therapy, what's that? Let's break it down!

What is Occupational Therapy?

Pediatric occupational therapy at Peakside Pioneers is all about supporting your little one as they learn, grow, and navigate the earliest milestones of life. We take a gentle, family-centered approach looking at both your child’s strengths and the areas where they need a little extra help, so you can feel confident in each step of your journey together.

In the early years, many of the “occupations” of childhood are co-occupations, meaning they’re activities your child experiences with you. Playtime, mealtimes, bath time, getting dressed, brushing teeth, winding down for sleep - these everyday routines are where development truly unfolds.

Sometimes challenges like feeding difficulties, motor delays, sensory processing differences, or regulation struggles can make these moments feel harder than they should. Occupational therapy helps uncover what’s getting in the way and offers supportive, practical guidance to make daily life smoother and more connected.

At Peakside, we’re simply your guides - here to help your little one grow with joy, confidence, and the freedom to thrive.
